Test Interfaces

Low Profile Interface

This unique test interface required 0.060" wide contact bars to prevent from shading the solar cell. This was achieved by standing our custom designed PCB's on end and drilling 0.039" thick holes in the width of the circuit board. Spring probes were then inserted and soldered to the PCB. The circuit board support is matte black anodized aluminum to prevent light reflection. Click on picture for a larger view.

Latching Test Interface

This spring probe based test interface is designed to contact our client's custom PCB assembly. The test interface features a spring loaded clamping pin which automatically latches when the user closes the cover.

The cover is then opened by pulling on the ring to release the latch pin. This fixture has pin-to-pin spacings as close as 0.050". Click on pictures for a larger view.

Precision Test Head

This precision machined test interface was designed to contact 16 points on 0.050" centers. The ground pin of the circuit is slightly lower (0.020") to make contact prior to any of the signal pins. The test interface cradle is made from one solid block of Ultem 1000 for holding tight tolerances. Electrical contact is made to our clients' test PCB via top side SMT pads soldered parallel to the probes. Click on pictures for a larger view.

CAMI Research: Cable Test Interface

This test interface is designed to allow a leading automation supplier to test custom cable assemblies using CAMI Research's patented CableEye test system. Electromechanica designed a custom PCB backplane to provide interconnect for either custom terminated cables or individual conductors. All signals from the cables under test are routed back to two 64 pin ribbon headers for connection to the test system. Click on pictures for a larger view.

Mixed Technology Test Fixture

Electromechanica, Inc. designed and built this custom test fixture for a large contract manufacturing company. The unit under test is a three-axis stepper motor control PCB. The UUT has both thru-hole and surface mount technologies on a 1.25mm pitch. Electromechanica, Inc. utilized gold-plated spring loaded probes to create this 'bed of nails' fixture. The test fixture probes 50 distinct points on this credit card sized circuit board making it an extremely densely probed PCB.

The previous test system for this PCB required the operator to manually plug in 12 individuals connectors. This process was slow and prone to damaging units under test. The test system connectors were constantly breaking and needed ot be replaced. Electromechanica, Inc. designed the custom fixture to require a simple swing of a clamp handle to make the 50 individual connection points. The new system is rated for over 1 million cycles.

The cream colored cradle is made from static dissipative acetyl (Delrin) for ESD protection. The tapered brass locating pins are used to align the unit under test by its own mounting holes providing the most precise mechanical alignment possible. By tapering the test fixture locating pins, the UUT is guaranteed to center on the pins regardless of slight mechanical irregularities in manufacture.

Key Benefits

  1. Dramatically improved testing productivity
  2. Guaranteed accuracy
  3. No risk of damaging unit under test
  4. Replaceable pins for easy self service

Custom PCB Test Fixture

This test apparatus supports high volume testing of rigid panels with multiple pin header types of interconnect. The geometry of the device under test required the fixture to precisely index on the outer edge of the panel.

This custom fixture was designed to eliminate the tedious and time consuming task of manually connecting 6 cables to test a membrane key switch assembly. This fixture quickly and accurately engages all test points for efficient electrical test.

This fixture establishes contact with 6 separate connectors in 1 motion. Once the operator has loaded the part into the guide, both hands are freed to operate the test computer.

Key Benefits

  • Dramatically reduced cycle time
  • More robust fixturing

Fine Pitch SMT Test Fixture

This fixture was designed and built to meet a clients need to test a circuit assembly with a 1mm pitch ZIF connector as well as discreet wire solder points. The fixture uses an array of very small, high precision spring loaded pins to make contact with the connectors solder tails. It was critical to actually test at these points to insure that the entire circuit path was checked.

Alignment was critical for this fixture as the pins are only 0.029" diameter with 0.010" between them! The entire pin holder/board guide assembly was machined in one operation from a solid block of Delrin to avoid any stack up of tolerances.

Key Benefits

  1. Much higher throughput than previous manual probing operation
  2. Eliminated stress on ZIF connector resulting in reduced product damage
  3. Fast 2 week turn around to meet client's schedule
